Cancel culture is defined as "the practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure" by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Cancel Culture has erupted as a way to remove people, places, and history from society by generally attacking a person, place, or historical event and judging it (them) by today's social standards. Cancel Culture has become a way of removing ideas and people from discussions by holding them to the standards of the present day versus when these events happened.

This is a dangerous approach, in my opinion. While I am not justifying events of the past, we cannot change history or what was once acceptable.. Doing this causes an "erasing" of history in some senses. Events like slavery and oppression were terrible things that happened in our past, but "erasing" them from history does not make it so those events did not happen. By "erasing" these events from history, we are making them more prone to happen again because it is human nature that we learn from our mistakes.

Also, going back decades and holding someone accountable for actions and statements that we made during a time when those were socially accepted and NOT ILLEGAL is a crime. We cannot re-write history based on how we think today and to hold someone to that standard, who has not violated any law at the time the event happened is unfair and ludicrous.

We, as a society, as Americans need to get over our "righteous" selves and look to our future. We can only do this by learning from our past and creating a new path forward while not demonizing legal events that were legally acceptable in our past.
